Historical Regata in Venice

The Regata Storica (Historical Regatta) returns to Venice on the 7nd of September and is one of the most spectacular and important in city life, making its presence felt in the hearts of all Venetians, even enticing tourists where possible. The Regata Storica opens with a historical parade, which re-enacts the welcome reserved in 1489 for Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus, when she denounced the throne on the island in favor of Venice. The regatta is in typical sixteenth-century style, lead by "Serenissima", the amazing boat that represents the Republic of Venice and manned by 18 oarsmen with a helmsman. This boat is followed by about ten multi-colored boats with gondoliers in typical costume who transport the Duke, Duchess Caterina Corsaro and all other important people from the ancient Venice government. The historical parade is then followed by the real regatta, which includes various races. The most important is the regatta of "gondolini", agile and swift boats which are only used for this regatta. Here champion oarsmen challenge each other, having been chosen after a complex selection process over the previous months. The "caorline" regatta takes place using large boats with six oarsmen and were once used by produce dealers from the islands of the estuary to transport their goods. The teams traditionally represent an area of the city or an island in the lagoon. The woman's regatta on "mascarete": this female regatta was very frequent from the sixteenth-century, but disappeared at the end of the XVII century. It was reinstated in the program in 1977. The youth regatta is on "pupparini", long and fast boats rowed by two oarsmen from 14 to 18 years of age. This is the breeding ground for future rowing champions. It's amazing to observe the public during the regattas: crowded along the banks, on the floating platforms or on boats along the Grand Canal, spectators enthusiastically participate while supporting their favorites with shouts and applause
