VENICE MARATHON, from Sport to History
Venicemarathon Casino of Venice Trophy': the most suggestive marathon reaches its twenty second edition. Against the usual backdrop, from the 'start', at the Brenta Riviera up to the walkway of Riva Sette Martiri in Venice, the race will unwind along the prescribed 42.195 kilometres, next October 25. 2009 edition features the opening of green areas of the San Giuliano Park in Mestre, the widest green space in Europe, where the race event operating centre (at the Hotel Russott) will be housed and where, with the coopeartion of CONI, the project 'Open Sport' will also be organised. Various sports federations will offer to the public attending the marathon the possibility of learning, and above all, practice new sports disciplines. Attention to solidarity is once again reconfirmed: cooperation between the Association Africa Mission Cooperation and Development, committed to supporting the poorest areas in Africa, which last year benefited of a donation of over 15 thousands Euro, continues also for this year. The marathon start is at Strà, at the beginning of that splendid area dotted with antique villas, alee the Brenta. Along this canal, which connects Padova to Venice, rich and noble Venetians had in fact built in the XVIII century their holiday homes: true architectural jewels like Villa Pisani, next to which the marathon starting line has been set, a starting point unwinding along the splendid Riviera del Brenta. The marathon will then cross the Marghera and Mestre centres running for some kilometres inside the San Giuliano Park and reaching Venice through the Ponte della Libertà, a flat stretch of road long little more than four kilometres, a point decisive for distancing the rest of the runners in past editions. Then the race enters the harbour area and reaches the historical centre: athletes will run next to the water, along the foundations called 'Zattere', up to Punta della Dogana next to the Giudecca Canal. After crossing the Canal Grande on a floating bridge built especially for the marathon, athletes will pass next to Saint Mark's Square, under the shadow of Palazzo Ducale. Still few hundred metres of running on the stone slabs of Venice and the marathon competitors can reach the arrival line, located on the wharf called Riva Sette Martiri, between Arsenale and Gardens, in a panoramic position in front of the Lagoon. The Venicemarathon route is therefore flat and fast, with the exception of few climbs (not more than one hundred meters) between the 25th and 30th kilometre. Plus, on the final portion of the race there are 14 small bridges to cross, facilitated by wooden ramps.
